A countercultural woman, Kateri Tekakwitha lived her celibate choice among her people, the Mohawk, teaching children and ministering to the sick and elderly. Because of childhood small pox that disfigured her face, she usually covered her head when leaving the longhouse.

Kateri’s posture indicates her strength that impels our attention to follow the direction of her passion, the Eucharist.

This sculpture was commissioned for the chapel of St. Mary’s in Crescent, N.Y.
