This sculpture is a reflection on an encounter with Berute, an aged, impassioned Lithuanian woman, as my artistic experience in sculpture was shared during dinner at her home in Vilnus, LT.

She as a young woman, was already an optimistic, sculptor of note. However the Soviet Occupation of 50 years suppressed her impetus at the onset. Survival buried hope.

Our birthing exchange that evening, forever forged within me an understanding of gift and the possibility that she might now continue her passion.

The imagery chosen is wrapped in the Muslim hijab, rendering the women’s cultural reality as shapeless. Yet their stance is that of permanence, passionate and pregnant.
